వాక్కాయ పప్పు (Vaakkaya Pappu) is a simple and delicious Andhra-style dal made with fresh vaakkayalu, also known as kalimkaya or karonda. The slight tanginess of vaakkaya gives this dal a wonderful flavour and makes it a perfect accompaniment for hot rice and a little ghee.
In this video, I am sharing my simple Telugu home-style recipe for making వాక్కాయ పప్పు. This is an easy everyday recipe that can be made with simple ingredients available at home.
Vaakkaya is also known by different names such as Kalimkaya, Karonda and Bengal Currant. It is traditionally used in many Indian recipes, especially dals, pickles and curries.
This pappu tastes especially delicious with hot steamed rice, ghee and a simple vegetable curry or fry.

Ingredients
Toor Dal – ½ Cup
Vaakkayalu – ½ Cup
Oil – 1 Tbsp
Mustard Seeds – ½ Tsp
Cumin Seeds – ½ Tsp
Green Chillies – 2
Curry Leaves – 2 Strands
Turmeric Powder – ½ Tsp
Red Chilli Powder – ½ Tsp
Garlic Pods – 4-5
Fried Methi Powder – ¼ Tsp
Hing/Asafoetida – ¼ Tsp
Salt As Per Taste
