Recently, the United States and India were in the news for discussions around a new trade framework aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two countries. Along with information about these talks, an official US government trade body shared a social media post related to the India–US trade relationship.
The post included a map of India that showed the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir, including Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Aksai Chin, as part of India. This depiction was different from how US government agencies usually present maps of the region, as the US generally avoids showing disputed territories without special markings.
The map quickly attracted attention, especially from Pakistan and international observers, who raised objections and concerns over the depiction. The issue escalated diplomatically, as maps involving disputed borders are highly sensitive in international relations.
Soon after the controversy began, the US trade body deleted the post entirely from its official account. No detailed public explanation was issued, but the timing made it clear that the removal was linked to the objections and diplomatic sensitivity surrounding the map.
The trade discussions between India and the United States continued separately, but the deleted post became a reminder of how even a visual element like a map can create diplomatic friction. The incident highlighted the care governments must take when presenting territorial representations in official communications.
