Recently, an international news report claimed that the Indian government was planning to introduce new smartphone security regulations that would require phone makers like Apple, Samsung and others to provide access to the source code of their operating systems and make several software-related changes. The idea behind such a move, according to that report, was to strengthen cybersecurity and better protect user data in the country.
These proposed changes were said to include not just source code access, but also things like notifying authorities before big software updates and storing system logs for longer periods. The talk of source code access raised concern among privacy advocates and tech companies, who argued it could expose proprietary technology and undermine user privacy.
However, the Indian government quickly denied that it has asked for source code or drafted any rule to force companies to share it. Officials clarified that what’s actually happening is a routine consultation process with industry stakeholders on mobile security standards. They stressed that no final regulation has been proposed or decided yet, and all discussions are part of exploring the best way to improve phone security without imposing any mandatory requirement. In short, there is ongoing talk and consultation, but no rule to mandate source code sharing has been imposed.
