India Completes 2,843-Km Dedicated Freight Corridor Network
India has completed its Dedicated Freight Corridor network after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the remaining three sections of the Western corridor on September 8. The newly opened stretches cover 326 kilometres and were developed at a cost of more than ₹20,700 crore. Together with the Eastern corridor, the completed network extends across 2,843 kilometres.
The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor runs from Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Maharashtra, creating a rail route for cargo moving between northern India and the western coast. The Eastern corridor connects Ludhiana with Sonnagar, serving major industrial and agricultural regions.
These tracks are reserved for goods trains. Previously, freight and passenger services often competed for space on the same lines. Moving more cargo onto dedicated tracks can reduce delays for goods, release capacity for passenger trains and make delivery schedules more predictable.
The final Western sections also strengthen rail access to the port, an important link for businesses sending and receiving containers. The government expects the completed network to support faster movement of raw materials and finished products while improving the efficiency of India’s supply chains.
Completion is a major milestone for a project developed over nearly two decades. Its full economic benefit will depend on how consistently industries use the corridors and how well freight terminals, ports and connecting rail lines handle the additional traffic. For now, India has a continuous dedicated rail network built to give cargo trains a clearer path across the country.
