Green Peas Usli👇
This is a common breakfast dish in Mangalore homes.
Mostly they add Phova chutney on the side as an accompaniment, i generally don’t do it so I make this on its own to enjoy!
If not for breakfast you can even serve it with roti for a simple side dish or dal and rice too.
Simple, protein-packed, and comforting.
We make this with dried, fresh or frozen green peas, tempered with mustard, chillies and finished with fresh coconut.
It’s soft, slightly mushy and a good breakfast option with a good cup of coffee or tea( I don’t have both 😜)
100g of green peas gives around 5 to 6g of protein, so it makes for a good protein breakfast too.
Recipe:
Serves: 3 to 4
You’ll Need:
Fresh green peas or frozen – 800g
Potato – 1 medium, chopped into small cubes, optional I added for a little body
Coconut oil – 1 tbsp
Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Dried red chillies – 2
Green chilli – 1, slit
Freshly grated coconut – 2 tbsp
Water – 1 to 1.5 cups
Salt to taste
Hing powder/asafoetida powder- 1/4 tsp or diluted hing – 1 tsp, optional
Method:
1. Heat 1 tbsp coconut oil in a pan. Add urad dal and when it slightly turns brown mustard seeds and let them splutter.
2. Add dried red chillies, green chilli, and hing. Sauté for a few seconds.
3. Add chopped potato, green peas, grated coconut, and salt.
4. Add 1 cup water if pressure cooking, or 1.5 cups if cooking in an open pot.
5. Cook covered till the peas and potato are soft and slightly mushy.
For pressure cooker: 3 whistles.
For open pot: cook on medium heat closed till done.
6. Check salt and serve hot.
Aps Notes:
If using dried green peas, soak overnight, pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles separately, then follow the tempering and add cooked peas.
Adding coconut while cooking makes it flavorful. Don’t skip it.
Happy Cooking and Eating,
Aps
