Michael Heiser explains that the Bible presents a worldview that includes both the physical world and a very real unseen spiritual realm. According to Heiser, ancient Israelites did not separate the natural and supernatural the way modern people often do. Instead, they believed the world was filled with spiritual beings created by God who participate in the administration of creation. In the Hebrew Bible, the word “elohim” is used to describe any being that belongs to the spiritual realm, not just God himself. However, Heiser emphasizes that Yahweh is completely unique among these beings because He is the creator and ultimate authority over all others.
Heiser describes the concept of the “divine council,” a heavenly assembly where God presides over other spiritual beings who serve under His authority. Passages such as Psalm 82 and parts of the Old Testament reflect this idea that God governs the world with the participation of these spiritual entities. Some of these beings were assigned roles connected to the nations of the earth. Over time, many of them rebelled against God and led humanity into corruption and idolatry.
Heiser outlines several major rebellions in the biblical story that explain the spread of evil and chaos. The first occurs in Eden, where the serpent deceives Adam and Eve and humanity falls into sin. The second rebellion occurs in Genesis 6 when certain supernatural beings, called the “sons of God,” take human wives and produce the Nephilim, which leads to widespread corruption and eventually the flood. The third rebellion occurs at the Tower of Babel, when humanity attempts to unite in defiance of God. After this event, God divides the nations and assigns them to spiritual rulers, but many of these rulers become corrupt and mislead the nations.
Heiser argues that much of the Old Testament narrative, including the conquest of Canaan and the references to giants, connects to this ongoing conflict between God and rebellious supernatural powers. These spiritual forces attempt to oppose God’s plan and corrupt humanity. The mission of Israel, and ultimately the mission of Jesus, is tied to reclaiming the nations and defeating these powers.
The climax of this cosmic conflict occurs through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to Heiser, the crucifixion was the turning point where the powers of darkness unknowingly participated in their own defeat. By rising from the dead, Jesus disarmed these spiritual authorities and began reclaiming the nations for God. Believers now become part of God’s restored family and participate in spreading the gospel to all nations.
Heiser concludes that the Bible tells a much larger story than many modern readers realize. It is not simply a book of moral teachings but an account of a cosmic struggle between God and rebellious spiritual powers, culminating in God restoring humanity and the nations through Jesus Christ.
