Private Henry Boone is nineteen years old, four months into his enlistment, and hopelessly separated from the column in the Chihuahuan Desert. When his patrol finds a goat drained of every drop of blood and tracks the size of dinner plates, they realize something ancient has woken up beneath the desert floor — and ten thousand soldiers marching through its territory just rang the dinner bell.
