Mark kneels closer to the altar, trying to understand the inhuman kneeling marks burned into the stone floor. The church lights have returned, casting a warm amber glow across the ancient walls, but the comfort is an illusion. As he leans forward, breath unsteady and eyes wide with disbelief, something watches from behind.
Unseen by him, four meters back in the aisle, the tall gaunt figure has returned. Its head tilts at an unnatural angle, hollow sockets fixed on him. The mouth hangs open, stretched far beyond what skin should allow. It does not move. It does not blink. It simply watches.
The horror isn’t in the darkness anymore.
It’s in the light, and in what stands there when you think you’re alone.
