विनोद कुमार शुक्ल के इस उपन्यास में कोई महान घटना, कोई विराट संघर्ष, कोई युग-सत्य, कोई उद्देश्य या संदेश नहीं है क्योंकि इसमें वह जीवन, जो इस देश की वह ज़िंदगी है जिसे किसी अन्य उपयुक्त शब्द के अभाव में निम्न-मध्यवर्गीय कहा जाता है, इतने खालिस रूप में मौजूद है कि उन्हें किसी पिष्टकथ्य की ज़रूरत नहीं है। यहाँ खलनायक नहीं हैं किंतु मुख्य पात्रों के अस्तित्व की सादगी, उनकी निरीहता, उनके रहने, आने-जाने, जीवन-यापन के वे विरल ब्यौरे हैं जिनसे अपने-आप उस क्रूर प्रतिसंसार का एहसास हो जाता है जिसके कारण इस देश के बहुसंख्य लोगों का जीवन वैसा है जैसा कि है। विनोद कुमार शुक्ल इस जीवन में बहुत गहरे पैठकर दाम्पत्य, परिवार, आस-पड़ोस, काम करने की जगह, स्नेहिल ग़ैर-संबंधियों के साथ रिश्तों के ज़रिए एक इतनी अदम्य आस्था स्थापित करते हैं कि उसके आगे सारी अनुपस्थित मानव-विरोधी ताक़तें कुरूप ही नहीं, खोखली लगने लगती हैं। एक सुखदतम अचंभा यह है कि इस उपन्यास में अपने जल, चट्टान, पर्वत, वन, वृक्ष, पशुओं, पक्षियों, सूर्योदय, सूर्यास्त, चंद्र, हवा, रंग, गंध और ध्वनियों के साथ प्रकृति इतनी उपस्थित है जितनी फणीश्वरनाथ रेणु के गल्प के बाद कभी नहीं रही और जो यह समझते थे कि विनोद कुमार शुक्ल में मानव-स्नेहिलता कितनी भी हो, स्त्री-पुरुष प्रेम से वे परहेज़ करते हैं या क्योंकि वह उनके बूते से बाहर है, उनके लिए तो यह उपन्यास एक सदमा साबित होगा–प्रदर्शनवाद से बचते हुए इसमें उन्होंने ऐंद्रिकता, माँसलता, रति और शृंगार के ऐसे चित्र दिए हैं जो बग़ैर उत्तेजक हुए आत्मा को इस आदिम संबंध के सौंदर्य से समृद्ध कर देते हैं, और वे चस्पाँ किए हुए नहीं हैं बल्कि नितांत स्वाभाविक हैं–उनके बिना यह उपन्यास अधूरा, अविश्वसनीय, वंध्य होता। बल्कि आश्चर्य यह है कि उनकी कविता में यह शारीरिकता नहीं है।
