WHY PM MODI IS BUILDING A 60 KM SEA WALL IN GUJARAT??

Why is India planning to build a massive 60 KM sea wall in Gujarat at an estimated project cost of ₹1.33 lakh crore?

The Kalpasar Project is one of India’s most ambitious proposed megaprojects, designed to transform part of the Gulf of Khambhat into a massive freshwater reservoir.

The Gujarat government plans to construct a 60.13-kilometre dyke between Bhavnagar and Bharuch, including approximately 26.7 kilometres directly across the sea.

The proposed reservoir could store over 7 trillion litres of freshwater and support irrigation across nearly 10 lakh hectares of agricultural land in Saurashtra.

But building such a massive structure comes with serious engineering challenges, including extreme tides, powerful ocean currents, sediment movement and environmental concerns.

To address these challenges, India has partnered with the Netherlands, a country famous for its expertise in sea dams and water management.

In September 2026, India and the Netherlands signed new agreements involving Deltares and TU Delft to support the Kalpasar Project.

The project is estimated to cost ₹1.33 lakh crore, with construction tentatively planned for 2028–2035, subject to approvals.

Watch this video to understand the Kalpasar Project, its engineering challenges, and why Gujarat wants to build a massive barrier across the sea.
