Could a lockdown be imposed due to the Nipah virus? The suspected presence of the deadly Nipah virus in West Bengal has caused widespread panic. Two suspected cases have been reported at the ICMR’s Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) located at AIIMS Kalyani. Given the high mortality rate of this virus and its rapid spread, the central government has placed it on “utmost priority” and warned the Mamata Banerjee government to remain vigilant. Nipah is a zoonotic disease, meaning it spreads from animals (fruit bats) to humans. Its severity can be gauged from the fact that it has a mortality rate of approximately 40% to 75%.
