The investigation into the massive cargo ship sinking in the Bay of Bengal off Paradip has intensified. The vessel reportedly sank in waters estimated to be 4.2 to 4.5 km deep, in the deep North Central Bay of Bengal, while carrying a heavy cargo load with a deadweight capacity of around 72,928 metric tonnes. The ship is believed to have sunk within just 8 minutes amid rough seas, bad weather and waves reportedly exceeding 4 metres. The Indian Coast Guard and Navy are conducting an extensive search operation in coordination with Chennai and Andaman-Nicobar MRCC. Three Coast Guard surface craft and an Indian Navy P-8I aircraft are involved in the search, while the search area has been expanded. Two Chinese sailors have been rescued, but questions remain over the missing crew, life rafts and the exact cause of the rapid sinking.
